WILLIAM HEATH ROBINSON (1872-1944)
The 20th century’s Gadget King · 11 July to 11 August 2007
A selling exhibition of 101 original illustrations to coincide with the launch of CONTRAPTIONS - a new volume of the most brilliant and memorable work by the cartoon wizard of machines and inventions. Despite a successful career as a children’s book illustrator, Heath Robinson is best known for his comic images and through the popular press he was recognised by the public as the ‘Gadget King’. His status was confirmed when ‘Heath Robinson’ became slang used by the army in the First World War to describe a improbable fantastical machine. This is the aspect of his work that will be on sale at the gallery in this exhibition including images affordable from his famous series parodying the self-help manual which began with How to Live in a Flat (1936).
