Rebecca Anne Cobb (born 1982)

Rebecca’s unique and charming style of illustration has made her one of the most recognisable new talents in the field of illustration. The influence of her surroundings is evident in her drawings, and Rebecca artfully creates the feel of a coastal landscape in such books as The Islanders.

Rebecca Cobb was born in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, on 10 May 1982. Her mother works as a staff nurse and her father is a primary school teacher. Rebecca’s family moved to Bridgwater, Somerset, when she was seven years old and this is where she spent her childhood, attending St Mary’s Primary School. Her talent for drawing came from her mother, and Rebecca remembers her mother spending time drawing with her from an early age. Her parents also passed on their love of reading, and throughout her formative years, she was constantly drawing, painting, writing stories and making things.

Rebecca knew from an early age that she wanted to become a book illustrator, and after gaining her A-Levels and taking a foundation course at Somerset College of Arts and Technology, Taunton, she moved to Falmouth in 2001 to study illustration at Falmouth College of Arts. Once she began her studies at Falmouth, and her knowledge of the subject was broadened, her passion for illustration blossomed further, and she realised how varied the world of children’s picture books could be.

Since 2005, Rebecca has illustrated twelve books, and has received numerous critical accolades for her work:
Missing Mummy and The Islanders were both nominated for the 2012 CILIP Kate Greenaway Medal for Illustration; Missing Mummy was also shortlisted for Peter’s Book of the Year 2011; Aunt Amelia and The Paper Dolls were both shortlisted for the IBW Book Award; The Paper Dolls was also shortlisted for the 2014 CILIP Kate Greenaway Medal; and The Empty Stocking won the 2014 Heart of Hawick Children's Book Award.

Rebecca currently lives in Falmouth.
