This watercolour by Thomas Rowlandson is a copy of The Village Barber L M L’Inghilterra, a satirical print of 1772 drawn by Henry Bunbury and etched by James Bretherton. Early in his career, Rowlandson copied a number of caricatures by Bunbury, his elder by seven years, as part of his artistic development. In this instance, he has transformed an interesting but somewhat naïve image into one that is full of life.
