EXHIBITED: 'THE AMERICANS ARE COMING', 5-30 MAY 2015
This commssioned drawing was part of a series that Hirschfeld did on a series of great clowns and one that he was especially proud of. In Hirschfeld On Line he explains: 'I didn't labor on it, and it doesn't look labored, which is very rare. I couldn't have done that years ago. I wouldn't have had the authourity ... Turpin is reduced to a simple line. Moving along he defies gravity. It's a kind of distillation, you squeeze all the inessential things out ... He's almost like a musical instrument, a violin or cello. And it's still him. That's my own thumbprint'.
