The Welsh poet and doctor, Dannie Abse (1923-2014), wrote The Meeting specifically for radio. It was broadcast on the Welsh Home Service on 27 May 1956, and its action was outlined in Radio Times as that in which ‘a young man hopes and believes that the message of the Speaker, when he arrives, will give meaning to the aimless existence of the inhabitants’ of a ‘great city’. It has been considered the precursor of Abse’s 1960 stage play, The House of Cowards.
