Gigi (Jacqueline Audry, France, 1949) is based on the 1944 novel by Colette. It predates Vincente Minnelli's more famous musical version by a decade. 16-year-old Gilberte (Daniele Delorme) has been raised by her aunt (Gaby Morlay) and her grandmother (Yvonne De Bray) to be a demimondaine. Not yet ready for that, she follows events from afar, while spending her time at her lessons, and in teasing her grandmother's old friend, Gaston Lachaille (Frank Villard). But when Gaston throws off his latest mistress, it looks as if Gigi just might be ready to begin her planned career.
