Hunt travelled to Le Puy-en-Velay in the Haute-Loire region of France in 1926. It is the start of one of the pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela, and the majesty and theatricality of its surroundings, and the spirituality of its setting, inspired him to dedicate this watercolour to the memory of his son, Esmond Moore Hunt, who died in 1927 at the age of 19. the pinnacle in the foreground is surmounted by the Chapel of Saint Michel D’Aguilhe, while the Corneille rock in the distance is topped by the Notre-Dame de France, an imposing statue of the Madonna and child. Hunt made a visual record of his visit to Le Puy-en-Velay in his sketchbooks of 1926, sb18 and sb19.
