A keen member of the alpine society, hunt frequently visited the alps and dolomites in pursuit of dramatic subjects for his paintings as well as challenging walks and climbs. In June and July 1953 Hunt and his wife Phyllis stayed at the Royal Hotel in Lucerne, travelling and sketching the surrounding area on extended day trips by car and steamer. Rosenlaui lies above Meiringen in the Bernese Oberland, and is only a mile from the Reichenbach falls, the scene of the fatal struggle between Sherlock Holmes and Moriarty.
