Francis Wainwright (1940- 1996)

Francis Wainwright was born in Yorkshire on 24 April 1940 and studied at the Burslem School of Art. After three years in the Household Cavalry (1957-60) he moved to Ravenna and Florence to continue his studies and was initially employed as a restorer for the Catholic Church. Turning freelance, he remained in Italy for sixteen years, working for a while as a theatrical designer and winning numerous awards including Florence's prestigious 'Le Muse'. During this period, he was much influenced by Pietro Annigoni.

Wainwright returned to England in 1976 and has since collaborated on children's books, often with his wife, Sheila Wainwright. In 1987 he worked on a new translation of Collodi's
Pinocchio, producing illustrations which reflect the landscape of Collodi’s own home area. He and Sheila then went on to work on two further Collodi projects: a television film with the Principal Film Co and a musical.
