Fred Taylor RI (1875-1963)


Fred Taylor was a major British poster artist, his posters often feature architectural subjects.

He was born in London and studied at the Académie Julian in Paris, Goldsmiths’ College School of Art in London and in Italy, during which time he won a gold medal and a travelling scholarship. During the first half of the 20th Century his advertising posters were in high demand, especially by railway companies including LNER, GWR and the London Underground. Selfridges, the Royal Mail Steamship Company and the Empire Marketing Board also commissioned posters from Taylor. He designed murals for Lloyd's Underwriters’ Room and for Austin Reed's Red Lacquer Room. Taylor lived in London where he was a member of Art Workers’ Guild from 1924. During World War II he was an official camoflage artist.

His work is represented in numerous public collections, including the V&A and the London Transport Museum, London.
