The trajectory of James Stroudley’s career was similar to that of Thomas Monnington (whose work is represented in Volume One of A Century of British Art , published by Chris Beetles Gallery 2021). Driven by a classicising impulse, underpinned by a strong sense of design, both artists began by producing major murals of figures in landscapes and ended by concentrating on geometric abstractions.
