Chatterley Whitfield was once one of 22 collieries on the Staffordshire coalfield, and is one of only 2 now remaining in preservation. The colliery opened in the first half of the 19th century, and was the first to produce a million tons in a year. Brammer's image shows the Chatterley Whitfield colliery tip as seen from Chell Heath in 1955.
