Public Spirit Mrs Smith. 'What Have you gentlemen been plotting down-stairs, that you look so guilty?' Mr. Smith. 'Plotting, my Love! Pooh! the fact is, we've been having a serious chat about the disgraceful – yes – disgraceful way foreign hotels are – er – drained, and all that; and (in the interest of our families and other English families who go abroad in the autumn) Jones, Brown, Robinson, and – er – I, have elected ourselves into a kind of Sanitary Inspection Committee, and have settled to pop over, just for a week or two, you know, and report upon some of the hotels at the best-known French watering-places, including – er – Paris. Rather a risky thing to do, of course; but we – er–- look upon it in the light of a duty!'

George Du Maurier (1834-1896)
