A member of the prominent Rothschild banking family, Arthur de Rothschild (1851-1903) was the son of Nathaniel de Rothschild, a winemaker and founder of the Château Mouton Rothschild. Arthur de Rothschild was an enthusiastic art collector and philatelist. He also held a keen interest in yachting, and provided prize money for the America’s Cup.

“He is very well known in Paris, and even more so at Monte Carlo. He owns a very beautiful yacht called the Eros, upon which he ‘does’ many parties very well. He is enormously rich; and he is quite partial to the Board of Green Cloth.

He is very fond of Art; and he is quite good-natured.”
