In 1957, Peter Coker passed his driving test and his first excursion abroad was with his wife and son, Vera and Nicholas, to stay at Le Corsaire in Etretat, Normandy and L'Hotel de la Plage in Audierne, Brittany. As his second solo show at the Zwemmer Gallery approached he did some painting on site.
'The coasts of Normandy and Brittany called for the use of distinct palettes and techniques... It is therefore not surprising that ... Waves and Rock (55) should remain close in character to the earlier paintings of Etretat. Land and sea are again represented, respectively, in terms of solidity and power. Cliff and beach have a literal density, slabs of pigment recreating the geology from rock face to pebble; broader, more dynamic strokes enact the movement of the breakers. Yet the two not only meet - in depicting water on the shore - but are united in both their stress on pictorial surface and their deceptively restricted range of colour.'
Peter Coker RA, 2002, pages 57 and 59
