This peaceful, rural scene was a common composition in Thomas Rowlandson’s work. The artwork A Carrier’s Waggon (in The Paul Mellon Collection at the Yale Center for British Arts) features a similar cart in front of the same cottage. Another example of wagons or carts arriving at a rural home or inn can be seen in the print Black Dog Inn Yard at Belfont, published by Elizabeth Jackson (a version is in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York).
