The Venetians in the painting are seated on the octagonal base of the column of St. Tòdaro, the Byzantine St Theodore of Amasea, the city’s first protector. Its pair, surmounted by the winged Lion and symbol of St Mark, is seen in the distance looking down the Riva degli Schiavoni. The small sculptures on the base amongst the sitters, depict the trades – a fishmonger, who offers fish from a wicker basket and a blacksmith hitting an anvil with a hammer. Other trades that were portrayed included a butcher and a wine seller, but, sadly due to erosion and damage the figures are sadly depleted and many are missing.
