This illustration from Margaret Tarrant's Nursery Rhymes was republished many times in different formats over the next 80 years. it is likely that this monochrome version, adapted from the original colour version, was for a later publication, possibly by a publisher's in-house artist. Due to the costs and limited supplies of paper and ink during both world wars, it is possible it was for one published during either of the wars, research is ongoing.

'Where are you going to, my pretty maid?'
'I'm going a-milking, sir,' she said.

'May I go with you, my pretty maid?'
'You're kindly welcome, sir,' she said.

'What is your father, my pretty maid?'
'My father's a farmer, sir,' she said.

'What is your fortune, my pretty maid?'
'My face is my fortune, sir,' she said.

'Then I can't marry you, my pretty maid!'
'Nobody asked you, sir!' she said.
