Clement Attlee (1883-1967) had served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1945-1951 at the head of a Labour government, before he was defeated in a snap election by Winston Churchill's Conservatives in October 1951.
At the time of the present cartoon, he was contesting the 1955 general election against Anthony Eden, following Winston Churchill's retirement. His campaign would prove unsuccessful, with the Conservatives increasing their majority.
