In 1646, the original church of St Peter was destroyed in the seige of Wallingford during the Civil war. It was rebuilt in the Georgian and Neo Classical style during the 18th century and the elegant open-work spire was added in 1776. Local resident and lawyer, Sir William Blackstone, paid for the spire on the understanding that the clock face below it was visible form his house.
