Mary Amelia Wollaston (1889-1943), known as Polly, was the daughter of Daniel Meinertzhagen VI, head of the Frederick Huth & Co merchant-banking dynasty. She married Alexander Wollaston (1875-1930), known as Sandy, a doctor, ornithologist, botanist, climber and explorer, and together they had three children. Sandy Wollaston travelled widely, and participated in two expeditions to New Guinea, during the years 1910 to 1913, being commemorated in the names of a bat, lizard and frog, all native to the country. In 1925, he received the Royal Geographical Society's Patron's Medal for his expeditions to New Guinea and Africa. Becoming a tutor at Cambridge, he was murdered by a student in his rooms at King's College.
