Percy Lancaster was born in Manchester on 28 November 1878. His parents were Frederick Henry Lancaster and Emily Smith. Emily was Frederick’s second wife and she had three children from a previous marriage. The year following their marriage they had Percy, and a year after they had another boy, William.
Percy Lancaster attended the Southport and Manchester Schools of Art, initially studying architecture before turning to painting. He worked in both watercolour and oil, primarily painting landscapes, and was also an established etcher.
In 1906 Percy Lancaster married Florence Waite in Southport, Lancashire and in July 1916 they had a daughter, Ruth.
Percy Lancaster was elected Associate of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers in 1910, a full Member of the Royal Society of British Artists 1914 and in 1921, a full Member of the Royal Watercolour Society. He exhibited regularly with galleries in London, including the Fine Art Society, and his works featured in Summer Show exhibitions at the Royal Academy between 1910-1938. His work was also exhibited at the Walker Gallery in Liverpool, and locally in Lancashire.
In 1921, Percy Lancaster founded the Southport Palette Club with artist Philip Connard RA, with the aim of promoting local artists. Today the society is still active and continues to host an annual exhibition for residents of Southport.
Percy Lancaster died on 26 November 1950 at home in Southport, Lancashire.
