In 1864, Albert Goodwin made his first visits overseas, going to Holland and, in the summer, Jersey. While on Jersey, he produced a number of scintillating watercolours that display the influence of artists of the Pre-Raphaelite circle into which he had entered, including Arthur Hughes, William Holman Hunt, Ford Madox Brown and George Price Boyce. Exhibits at the Society of Painters in Water Colours in 1873 and 1874 suggest that he may have made a second visit to the island about a decade after the first.
