The present drawing is a favourite composition of Thomas Rowlandson, that of the interaction between a beautiful young woman and an older husband or lover. This scene appears to be set over the purchase of an expensive bonnet. The old man holds a bill and berates his young wife, while a maidservant eavesdrops from the hallway, holding the offending bonnet.

There is a simplified version of the drawing in the Boston Public Library. The composition of an extravagant wife and angry husband is one that Rowlandson used on a number of occasions.
