The medieval walled town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Bavaria, sits on a plateau above the river Tauber. Its fortifications include 46 towers and numerous gateways, the northern entrance to the town is through the Klingen Gate (named after the gorge below). This gateway links the fortified St Wolfgang’s church and the 37 metre, Klingen Tower and was strategically designed to funnel attackers into a narrow, confined space, making them more vulnerable to fire from the surrounding towers and fortifications.
