The Feast of Our Lady of Health (Festa della Madonna della Salute) is a major Venetian festival held annually on November 21 to commemorate the end of the 1630 plague (in which which over 47,000 Venetians died). Thousands of residents make a pilgrimage to the Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute, crossing a temporary bridge over the Grand Canal to light candles, pray, and feast on traditional Castradina soup a rustic dish made from castrated mutton, cabbage and spices.
