The statue of Queen Nefertari with her hand touching the foot of Colossus Ramses II is located in the first courtyard (also known as the Court of Ramses II) of the Luxor Temple. The affectionate gesture is a reflection of Nefertari’s status, she was the first and most beloved Great Royal Wife of Pharaoh Ramses II and as a highly educated woman, played a pivotal role in diplomacy in 19th Dynasty Egypt. At Abu Simbel, Ramses II broke with tradition by carving statues of Nefertari at the same height as his own, representing her as his equal partner.
